While substance abuse and substance use disorder are common throughout many populations, sometimes clients are unwilling to attend treatment of their own volition. Extended periods of substance abuse tend to create legal issues for the addicted individual, often landing them in court for a variety of different transgressions. More and more often, the criminal system elects to send those with substance abuse issues to rehabilitation programs in lieu of sending them to prison. These treatment programs have a much higher likelihood of providing rehabilitation than incarceration does.
