Are There Holistic Methods That Speak Better to Women?

Holistic approaches to care are just as critical as conventional approaches. A combination of both makes for a well-rounded treatment and recovery. Not only does holistic treatment help addiction treatment, but it can also be a huge benefit for women.

Holistic and women’s treatment go hand in hand, serving women’s needs comprehensively. As addiction treatment progresses, we are working towards the best possible services for women. Through holistic methods, women can better benefit from addiction treatment. This article will look at specific holistic therapies that address the needs of women.

Guided Meditation

The principles of meditation place focus on internal function. It allows us to shut out external problems and examine our internal emotional status. This can be especially beneficial when going through treatment as it brings attention to emotional processing. Women need space to express themselves emotionally in a safe setting.

There is a stigma that is placed on women as being emotional creatures. This has caused some women to adapt to this commentary by putting aside more emotional displays. For many clients, this could be true due to prior experiences with trauma and emotional abuse. Yet meditation is a space for women to stay in touch with their emotions, reconnecting more healthily.

Spiritual Therapy

This type of therapy is a way of incorporating spiritual and religious faith into recovery. According to the Journal of Religion and Health, 84% of scientific studies show faith is a positive factor in addiction prevention or recovery. Spiritual therapy can reset our commitment to our faith for clients who feel connected to religion. This can help women as Women’s Health Reports lists that women are, by and large, more spiritual than men. Providing this treatment can help women reconnect with what matters most in their lives. In this case, this is their faith or religion.

Routine Exercise

Regular exercise is linked with a healthier lifestyle. Yet, for those in addiction, it can be an avenue for better mental health and community. As group therapy evolves, there are also group exercises where men or women can meet for a particular activity. This can come in the form of runs or yoga together. For women, this can be beneficial as they gain a sense of community from completing an activity together. Having a goal to work towards and working on physical health also serves emotional health.

Proper Nutrition

While we hear growing up that it is essential to have a healthy diet, we may not give enough credence to how much food affects our moods. Food is necessary for restoring the natural hormone cycle in the body for women who are in recovery and gaining strength after treatment.

Depending on what we eat, certain foods do a better job of restoring vital vitamins and minerals into our systems. Even after treatment, this helps keep our bodies energized and balanced. This is why learning about how foods and different food groups affect us can educate us about what we need since food can affect our systems differently. Learning about our bodies is the best way to tune into ourselves.

Counseling

While exercise and diet go a long way in restoring natural balance, the benefits of counseling should not be overlooked. Counseling may provide an area where you can openly discuss past trauma, present issues, or future plans. For women who have not been given safe spaces or are haunted by abuse, the option for counseling can feel foreign.

Yet, it is even more critical that we learn about ourselves through this therapy process. We can learn new information about ourselves and how we see the world. Getting proper outside perspectives lends itself to healing our self-image. It is not dealing with the act of addiction but, more aptly, the “why” of addiction.

Art Therapy

The last type of holistic therapy is a form of therapy with no constraints. Some people find counseling and therapy intimidating because they don’t have the right words to communicate. This can make us feel like the words are stuck in our throats and we are unable to say what’s on our minds honestly.

Art therapy is a way of dissolving these worries and focusing on the process. Since we don’t need words, all we need is a space to sing, play, paint, or draw. This can free us from stress and anxiety. Women learn a way to communicate that empowers them and their beliefs. Restoring that confidence is essential to healing the emotional bruises of time.

Finding Treatment

At First Steps Recovery, we value individuality, especially when it comes to addiction treatment. Holistic therapy is comprehensive in that it serves all possible interests of an individual. It also achieves a way for women to be provided with an array of services. We want our clients to feel free from addiction.

Addiction recovery is essential for our female clients as women deal with unique substance dependency variables. Providing the best possible treatment is our aim, but individuals should feel focused on the best possible course of recovery. We all deserve sobriety, but above all, we deserve freedom.
